چکیده

[1] The time dependent optical emission model developed by Liu and Pasko (2004) is applied to studies of far-UV emissions of sprite streamers due to N2 Lyman-BirgeHopfield (LBH) band system. Modeling results indicate that the LBH emissions of sprite streamers at 70 km are generally stronger by up to a factor of 10 than those from the first negative band system of N2 , and experimental measurements of the ratio of these two emissions at sprite altitudes can be used to determine poorly known quenching altitude of the N2 (a 1 g) state. Modeling studies of NO-g emissions of sprites

[1] Motivated by observations of NO-g emissions: NO(AS) ! NO(XPr) + hn from streamer discharges in laboratory experiments, we develop a model to study these emissions associated with streamer discharges in air at different pressures. The modeling results indicate that the NO(AS) species in sprite streamers at 70 km altitude are mostly produced by interaction of N2(A Su ) metastable species with...

Estimation of electric charge in sprites from optical and radio observations

[1] Measurements of very low frequency radio emissions indicate that substantial electric current flows inside some sprites. This charge motion, with presently unknown location and distribution, is related to the detailed internal microphysics of sprite development that is in turn connected to the impact sprites have on the mesosphere. Assuming that sprite streamers propagate along the directio...

Red sprite discharges in the atmosphere at high altitude: the molecular physics and the similarity with laboratory discharges

An overview of the general phenomenology and physical mechanism of large-scale electrical discharges termed ‘sprites’ observed at high altitude in the Earth’s atmosphere above thunderstorms is presented. The primary emphasis is placed on summarizing available experimental data on various emissions documented to date from sprites and interpretation of these emissions in the context of similar da...

Effects of photoionization on propagation and branching of positive and negative streamers in sprites

[1] Modeling studies indicate that double-headed streamers originating from single electron avalanches in lightning-driven quasi-static electric fields at mesospheric altitudes accelerate and expand, reaching transverse scales from tens to a few hundreds of meters and propagation speeds up to one tenth of the speed of light, in good agreement with recent telescopic, high-speed video and multich...

Formation of sprite streamers at subbreakdown conditions from ionospheric inhomogeneities resembling observed sprite halo structures

[1] Modeling results of sprite streamer formation from large ionospheric inhomogeneities or patches (several tens to hundreds of meter wide) indicate that positive streamers can be initiated at subbreakdown conditions from the inhomogeneities with a density comparable to sprite halo densities. For spherical patches with a given radius, the minimum density required for streamer initiation decrea...
